The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for
Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP) is recruiting
Up to 21 new Postdoctoral Research Positions across three locations:
Adelaide - Sydney ? Melbourne

Join a world-class transdisciplinary team.

Suits: Physicists, chemists, material scientists, bioengineers and biologists who are keen to work across the boundaries of their disciplines

 Are you interested in developing your career in a highly dynamic transdisciplinary research environment?

The CNBP will build on the leadership at the University of Adelaide, Macquarie University and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in the fields of nanoscience, photonics and biomolecular science. We will pursue fundamental science at these intersections to create new paradigms for probing molecular processes within living systems and enhance Australia's strengths in these areas. By bringing these fields together and creating knowledge at the discipline boundaries, we will transform our understanding of nanoscale events in living systems.

 Our transdisciplinary scientific objectives are to:

1.  Create nanophotonics platforms capable of coupling physics at multiple scales ? from the nanoscale to the macro - to bridge the gap from cellular to macroscopic processes.

2.  Transcend current biosensing boundaries to create assays within living organisms

3.  Apply these assays to particularly challenging biological systems including the embryo, the living brain and the heart;

4.  Develop a molecular level understanding of biological mechanisms, processes and functionalities in these systems;

5.  Evaluate interactions between the engineered and biological systems to capture underlying biological complexity.

Successful candidates will have expertise in one of the below areas:

University of Adelaide Node:

Physics:  Nanophotonics;  Biosensors; Surface functionalisation;  Glass science

Chemistry: Synthetic organic chemistry, Bioorganic chemistry; Surface chemistry

Health Science:  Vascular biology

Macquarie Node:

Physics:  Nanotechnology;  Bioimaging and image analysis; Optical/microscopy instrumentation development;  Biophysics;  Nanoscale characterizations; High-speed data acquisition and programming;

Chemistry:  Controlled growth of hybrid nanomaterials; Lanthanide materials; Responsive probes; Analytical chemistry; immunoassays

Biology:  Cellular epigenetics; Small molecule analysis at single cell level;   Real time detection of macromolecular perturbations; Biomolecular conjugation; Biophotonic developmental biologist;  systems biology analysis; Small molecule assays

RMIT Node:

Physics: Fluorescent nanoparticles;  Nanoparticle characterisation;  Fluorescence microscopy;  Nanodiamond;  Wide band gap materials;  Nanoparticle-photonic integration;  Nanoparticle surface functionalisation;  Photonic modelling;  Information theory;  Superresolution imaging;

This is an opportunity to develop your research career within a world-class transdisciplinary research environment.

CNBP has defined pathways for commercialisation, community outreach, empowering women in science and empowering the next generation of scientists.  Successful candidates will be expected to self-nominate their interest in supporting one or more of these initiatives.

 Essential Selection Criteria (Level A)

  • PhD or equivalent in physics, chemistry, material science, bioengineering or biology (or thesis submitted)
  • Demonstrated record of research excellence, including publications in leading science journals
  • Capacity to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability in effective collaboration

 Desirable Selection Criteria (Level A)

  • Experience working in a transdisciplinary research environment or team
  • Demonstrated commitment to contributing to one or more of the Centre goals in communication, outreach, commercialisation and/or governance

The successful applicant will be appointed at an appropriate level depending on qualifications and relevant experience.  An attractive superannuation package is also provided.
